This wiki is a temporary page to organise a play as part of a Graduate Diploma in Primary/elementary teaching.
Play concept –What goes on inside a student.
Group 8 - Michelle, Svetlana, Alison, Alex, Richard, David, Ken Nee and Ian
Svet has allocated us a group on LMS to which we all need to sign up to. GROUP 8
All following are suggestions which of course are open to any change we all suggest.
suggested Plot/scenario
teacher is taking class in front of student on various subjects – both student and teacher could be miming, the main dialogue is ‘inside’ the student
sitting behind student are the internal elements of the student
Cast roles
Teacher
Student
Narrator
Cast 'inside' the student
rational thought
free spirit
sceptic
stomach / bodily needs
sporty or other
Props
cut outs of other students or just empty chairs?
card board thought balloons for teacher or on powerpoint?
powerpoint of pictures and sound to accompany.
suggestions for how we could look like we're inside a student:
I have some bendy poles from a big dome tent we could use without the tent to maybe make a see through head shape??RG
Powerpoint - suggest opening/intro sequence has a series of photos going inside the student 1. student 2. students ear 3 close up of ear 4. tunnel 5. door marked private 6 'knock' 'knock' in star shape on door (like 'kapow/blammo' in batman comics 7. door opens and inside head crew are there (sitting around pizza box?) 8 comic/pictures of each member introduced by narrator.
Alex would like to video which seems a good idea - he has one recorder does someone have another?
Internal distractions
student is distracted by competing needs, elements take turns to distract: ·bodily functions (dressed in red?) who is hungry or needs to go to toilet or is itchy/restless – says so and student actually itches.Could have recorded stomach gurgling sounds on overhead. ·free spirit (lots of colour rainbow scarf?) who would like to fly away – verbalises daydreams, student looks out window (could look at powerpoint which has picture out of window) ·sceptic (wearing black?) who thinks ‘c’mon what is the point of all this, tells rational mind ‘don’t bother’ – rowdy sceptic crosses arms leaning back in chair voices. ‘I’m bored’ etc. ·sporty (sports outfit?) who is restless and would rather be playing footy/hockey/netball plays with stick/ball- says ‘I need to move, how long till recess’ student and rational thought look at clock, rational thought says ’20 minutes’, sporty gets up and plays hockey around others ·rational thought (could be introduced by narrator ‘meanwhile rational thought is trying to concentrate’) is trying to make sense of what is being taught and concentrate, tells other elements to hush, strikes thoughtful pose, talks through strategies to work out sum, sceptic says ‘come on, it can’t be that hard’, ‘shush, I'm thinking’ says thought – could hold up light bulb picture over head or on powerpoint when idea makes sense and all elements cheer. Student completes written work and takes up to techer.
The narrator could introduce the elements with accompanying pictures on the overhead powerpoint – caricatures or actual photos of cast mucking about/in pose.
Narrators script to ensure continuity during the 10 minute play if necessary and/or teacher could talk about sum and then mime while internal elements are talking External distractions
Student could also be distracted by student in class or distract other students – goaded on by internal elements, perhaps the sceptic is bored and suggests to student to hit person sitting next to (ie pretend/act to empty chairs next to student (who could be called Jeremy!)
Other suggestions for lines
stomach – ‘anyone hot in here’all elements agree, student takes jumper off – rational thought says ‘oh all right then’ and pretends to take jumper off as student actually takes jumper off ie is distracted.
Rational thought – ‘I’ don’t get this...any ideas’ looks at others who all look at each other and shrug ‘gee thanks’ says rational mind’
Rational thought says I should ask her a question (student and rational thought look at teacher) others egg student on saying – ‘go on, ask’. Stomach says ‘no don’t, I’ve got butterflys’ and looks terrified/uncomfortable.
Student gets in trouble section?
Student drops pencil case sporty says ‘I’ll get it’, others say sit down.
We have to incorporate music - can anyone play an instrument? Sing?
